Divining the Digital: Developing and Supporting Analytics in Liberal Arts Learning, Research and Innovation.

Few seasoned practitioners of digital scholarship in the social sciences and humanities assume that the application of technology to any significant research problem will be faster, cheaper, or even initially better. And yet, the digital is often trumpeted as a inexpensive, easier analog – a panacea for all that troubles research and teaching. Skepticism abounds. Not only amongst digital scholars who are generally well aware of the limitations, but also by those who question the very application of computational methods to sticky humanities problems. This is especially the case when digital projects fail to achieve their grandiose promises, propping up twentieth-century approaches rather than extending or even transcending them. As such, digital scholarship faces the challenge of not only refining a methodology that is constantly in motion, but a significant community of skeptics who dismiss its efficacy and applicability.
