When Virtual Meets Reality Workshop

When Virtual Meets Reality Workshop
Advances in game technology, social networking and digital media offer new opportunities for treating neurodevelopmental disorders

This workshop will bring together investigators and trainees from NeuroDevNet (NDN) and GRAND, with the specific goal of exploring areas of complementary research interests and expertise in the development and application of emerging digital technologies as novel therapeutic tools. This one-day event will include invited lectures covering selected topics and small group discussions aimed at identifying specific research questions to be addressed within this strategic initiative.

A key deliverable from this workshop will be the development of potential new directions and collaborative research opportunities across NDN and GRAND. The design, testing and optimization of novel technologies for therapeutic application in targeted clinical populations has implications for both commercialization (potential to create new products and/or services) and delivery of health care (potential to create new and/or more effective therapeutic interventions) that will impact positively on the health and economy of Canada.

Dates/ Location

Friday, June 4 – Saturday, June 5
The Westin Ottawa (Canada)

Keynote Address, Dr. Mindy Levin, McGill University
“Brave New Virtual Worlds”

Group Brainstorm session (& Nutrition Break)
Identify areas of overlap and potential collaborations based on the information packages/papers distributed before the workshop. Ideas to consider:

• Existing evidence?
• Sample size?
• Controls?
• Outcome measures?
• Feasibility?
• Knowledge translation?
• Expense?
• Comparisons to current therapies/treatments?

Presentation, Dr. Laurent Itti, University of Southern California
“Computational modelling of attention and visual behaviour”

Interest Group Session
Divide into three smaller groups that will each tackle one or two of the research themes identified from the brainstorming session. These groups should include members from both NeuroDevNet and GRAND to capitalize on expertise. Discussions should include ideas about the following:

• Objectives
• Methodologies
• Timelines
• Outcome measures
• Locations

12:00-1:00pm Working Lunch

Demonstration, Dr. Shane Dunne, Dunne and Associates Technology Consulting Inc. “Interactive Games for EEG Biofeedback Training”

Presentations from interest groups
Informal presentation of ideas from each interest group and feedback from the larger group will be generated and recorded. Determine any overlap between research questions and if there are opportunities to maximize resources.

Each group will receive 30 minutes.

2:30-2:45pm Nutrition break

Fine tune research question to one core (keeping in mind):

• Priority?
• Greatest impact?
• Fundability
• Expertise?

Identify the timelines for the research proposal and determine who (2-3 individuals) will take the lead on drafting the initial proposal. Determine how the larger group will provide feedback on the initial draft.

4:00-4:15pm Short debrief
4:15-4:30pm End of workshop
