Lola Wong is a PhD Student in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University. A long-time contributor to GRAND, Lola was Graduate Student and Postdoc Committee (GSPC) chair in 2012, 2014 and co-chair in 2013 and has been an active representative of HQP in GRAND. Lola’s initial research in GRAND (with PNIs Drs. Sam Trosow and Jacquelyn Burkell) focused on identifying successful user-generated content (UGC) models and needed UGC policy infrastructure. She later turned to the phenomenon of viral media, and whether “virality” is due to random or predictable factors. In Phase 2, Lola continues her collaboration with Dr. Burkell in NEWS2, a project examining the production and consumption of news media online. Lola will focus on information diffusion via social media, looking at why people share information from external sources (such as news organizations) through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. She is also assisting Dr. Burkell's research lab on a multi-stage project for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
