GRAND 2013 Workshops

GRAND 2013 workshops present a variety of opportunities to enhance the conference experience. These workshops are scheduled for either before after the main conference, and provide researchers and HQP with an expanded opportunity for professional development and connection with those with similar research interests.

Mitacs Steps - Effective Networking

      Date: May 13th, 2013
      Time: 1pm - 4pm
      Venue: Delta Chelsea Hotel
      Max/min participants: 15-30
      Organizers: GRAND / Mitacs

Mitacs and GRAND are pleased to offer Effective Networking, a Mitacs Steps workshop to be held at the Delta Chelsea Hotel on Monday, May 13th. This workshop is open to GRAND graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are either based in Toronto, or visiting Toronto to attend the GRAND 2013 conference.

Space is limited. Click here to register

The session will cover who-what-where-when and why to network, and participants will leave with the tools they need to succeed in their research internships. Participants will also learn the importance of sharing contacts, and will receive insights on how to refresh, build, and make the most of the networks they already have.

Participants will learn:
  • How to use - but not abuse - your network
  • How to make the first minute count
  • How to listen carefully
  • The importance of a handshake
  • How to remember names
  • How to work a room
  • How to build rapport and influence decision makers
  • How to follow-up

Listening with Empathy
An interactive workshop for researchers working with human subjects

      Date: May 13th, 2013
      Time: 1pm - 4pm
      Venue: Delta Chelsea Hotel
      Max/min participants: 8-20
Organizers: GRAND / Lil Blume, Communications Consultant

Your work may involve talking to vulnerable people. Their experiences and unmet needs have likely led them to have many debilitating emotions. At times, they may feel afraid, disconnected, cold, distant, sad, tense, agitated, angry, embarrassed, and confused. If they experience any of these emotions during your research, it will affect their participation. To be most open and responsive, people need to feel safe, accepted, and understood.

The first step in opening communication and helping others who are having negative emotions is to recognize and accept their emotions. However, listening can be difficult and different situations require different types of listening.

In this workshop, we will explore empathic listening techniques and skills for thinking on our feet when we hear hard-to-answer statements. We will focus on listening when we want to connect, reduce tension, or empower others to solve problems.

In this workshop we will
a. Analyze our listening behaviours
b. Identify and analyze accepting and rejecting responses
c. Roleplay paraphrasing and empathic listening
d. Discover how to communicate helpfully with troubled people

Biometric Technologies

      Date:
May 13th, 2013
      Time: TBA
      Venue: OCAD University
Min/max participants: 12-14 (by invitation only)
Organizers: Paula Gardner and the Mobile Experience Lab

A “Biometric Technologies” Workshop will be hosted at OCADU by Paula Gardner (GRAND PI) and the Mobile Experience Lab. This one-day event, directly proceeding the GRAND conference, brings together researchers from the GRAND and NeuroDevNet networks, to exchange our diverse research with biometric devices. Devices to be discussed include consumer and prosumer-grade devices such as EEGs, heart-rate monitors, ECGs, pulse oximeters, breathe monitors, and GSR’s, among others. The workshop invites researchers to discuss biometric devices in the context of our research premises, questions, methods/applications, and findings. Through this framework, the workshop aims to explore innovative uses of biometric devices via diverse processes and for varied purposes and goals.

How does Canada's research ethics policy apply to your research? Find out by participating in this interactive workshop session. Explore real research situations, discuss and debate the ethical issues, and learn how to apply guidance from the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, 2nd edition (TCPS 2).

Health and Digital Media Research

GRAND is planning a one-day workshop in Toronto the day after the GRAND 2013 conference, on Friday May 17. The workshop will bring together 12-18 GRAND researchers with roughly an equal number of health, healthcare, and medicine researchers to brainstorm ways in which we can increase our research on health and healthcare applications that involve digital media. GRAND researchers who currently hold CIHR funding, or who work in areas related to healthcare, are encouraged indicate their interest in attending the workshop. This workshop has limited capacity.

Note: If your research involves patients, please also consider attending the Listening With Empathy Workshop.

1. If you responded to our earlier call, please let us know if you currently have any scheduling conflicts between Friday Sept. 27 and Friday November 1.

2. We found that many more GRAND researchers are working on healthcare-related projects than we anticipated. If this applies to you and if you have not responded to our earlier call, please do so now:
        I) In one or two sentences, what work do you do now that is health-related?
II) In one or two sentences, what work would you like to do that is health-related?
III) Do you currently hold CIHR funding? If so, what kind (e.g., Operating Grant)?
IV) Are you interested in attending this workshop in the Fall?
